Hemp Seed Oil - WTF??

Although I do not indulge in the alleged pleasures of Mary Jane,  it is my understanding that the oil derived from the seeds of the marijuana plant, has amazing properties that are very beneficial to natural hair.

Here's what I found out -

First off, it is important to note that hemp seed oil is a harmless derivative of the cannabis plant, that has no hallucinogenic or narcotic properties.  That means no getting a buzz from using it.

Research has show that hemp seed oil helps develop keratin, which is an essential building block for healthy hair.  It is rich in fatty omega acids, which is essential in anti-aging, keeping hair and skin supple and healthy, by helping retain moisture and protein.

I hadn't heard much about the use of hemp seed oil for hair until recently.  I'm wondering if there is some sort of stigma attached because it is derived from a banned substance.  If it is as great as they say it is, that would be a real shame.

Some people call it a miracle hair elixir.  I haven't tried it yet, so I can't co-sign that statement.  I have ordered myself a little bottle of oil, as well as some hemp seed butter.  I cannot wait to test these out.  I will update the post with a review after I try them! - YB

  1. Hi YB. Let me point out that hemp seed oil is NOT the same as hemp oil. While the hemp and marijuana plant are both Cannabis plants, the difference - as you point out - is that marijuana contains THC (a psychotropic compound) while hemp does not. The analogy is one is a St. Bernard and the other is a Chihuahua...both are dogs, but they are very different from one another.

Hemp seed has been used since at least 7,000 BC for a variety of goods including food, clothes, medicine, etc. Today, hemp is used all over the world, including the US, for the same goods. It may surprise you to learn that today's Mercedes Benz and Audi, for example, contain 10% hemp (panelling).

In the US, hemp and marijuana were erroneously combined as the "evil weed" starting in the 1920s. While it is not illegal to grow hemp, it does require a permit from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). The last permit, that I know of, was issued to the state of Hawaii in 1999 and has since expired. It will interesting to see how the DEA reacts to the slew of states allowing for the cultivation of hemp.

Hemp seed oil is indeed very beneficial for anyone's else. It contains the ideal ratio of Omega-3s to Omega-6s (3:1), and plenty of Omega-9 and protein. It is a carbon negative plant, meaning that it absorbs more CO2 than it releases as it grows and is extremely beneficial to the soil requiring no pesticides, herbicides and insecticides. Just make sure to buy your hemp seed oil (not hemp oil which should be rightly called marijuana oil) which is a fine tasting culinary oil. Not everyone grows their hemp organically, nor processes it optimally.

Full disclosure, my company - EcoStar Health, Inc. - distributes premium hemp seed foods, including hemp seed oil.

  2. Hi Jean-Pierre!

Thank you for visiting the page, and providing such wonderful clarification and insight into hemp usage in the US. I didn't know there was a distinction between the marijuana plant & hemp plant. This is very interesting - and good to know!

I purchased my hempseed oil from Texas Natural Supply (http://www.texasnaturalsupply.com/Hemp-Seed-Oil-Unrefined-p/hmpsu-o.htm)
It's not organic. They do however give some insight on how they process the seeds to attain the oil (just click the link).

I am very interested in learning more about hempseed oil usage in hair products. I've checked out your website. You really know your stuff! I look forward to exploring it more, and expanding my knowledge.

Thank you so much for taking the time to educate me and my readers!
